Company registers range of patterns based on JK Rowling’s best-selling boy wizard saga
New tartans have been registered to celebrate Harry Potter and other characters in JK Rowling’s stories about the boy wizard.
Harry Potter tartan is one of 19 new designs now recorded in the official Scottish Register of Tartans in Edinburgh.
The new additions, designed by Margi Lawson of tartan specialists Tartan Manor, also include designs for Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, and Harry’s closest friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
They could be used in the future to produce clothing and accessories.
The Harry Potter tartan includes black to represent his round glasses and wizard robe together with white for Hedwig, his owl; brown for his holly wand, red for his distinctive lightning-shaped scar, and his Gryffindor House colours of maroon and yellow.
Notes on the Hermione Granger tartan reveal it includes colours associated with “a few of her famous spells including the Polyjuice Potion, which turned her into Millicent Bulstrode’s cat”.
Ron Weasley’s tartan features dark orange “intended to represent the Weasley family’s famous ginger hair” together with beige to represent “the big ‘R’ on Ron’s home-knit jumper”, the maroon and yellow Gryffindor colours, and brown for Scabbers, his pet rat.
One of the most striking is dedicated to Harry’s loyal friend Luna Lovegood, and features white, red, yellow, pink, green, purple and blue.
The darkest tartan is for Lord Voldemort, with black, dark grey and charcoal colours to make it intentionally “deathly looking”.
The notes state: “Colours: black, dark grey & charcoal are intended to represent the Dark Lord and his billowing dark robe; green is for when Voldemort was known as Tom Riddle and his Slytherin House colour, and white is for Voldemort’s pale white face.”
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has its own tartan, with the notes stating: “white is for the school ghosts; red, green, blue and yellow, the Hogwarts House colours; light brown for the Hogwarts stonework, and dark grey is for the Hogwarts spires.”
Professors McGonagall, Snape and Umbridge also have their own tartans, while the Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Gryffindor houses are all represented with their own designs.
Prof Umbridge’s bright pink and red design represents “Umbridge’s sickly sweet taste in clothing and décor, her ornate and flowery china tea cups and cat plates displayed in her office, and the blood from Harry Potter’s hand when writing his lines because of Professor Umbridge’s evil ‘quill spell’.”
Other tartans making up the range are dedicated to the Hogwarts Express, in red, black and gold together with pale grey for “the billowing smoke”; Dobby the house elf in cream, grey, light green and pale salmon pink; and Hedwig the snowy owl, represented by the white of its feathers, dark brown for its flecks and yellow and black for its striking eyes.
